ALT x Pittsburgh Zoo: Girty’s Woods Restoration Workday Series 4

May 22 @ 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Week 4: Tree Planting

Registration is required so we can communicate in case of any necessary changes.

Every Friday throughout the month of May, ALT is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Zoo to restore wild space in Girty’s Woods. Over the course of five weeks, we’ll work together to build a trail, remove invasive plant species, plant native trees, and install trail markers and signage. Together we’ll restore a scenic hiking route to a green space that supports native wildlife and promotes the health and wellbeing of its neighbors.

Week 4: Volunteers will use shovels, mattocks, and mallets to plant trees and install deer protection. Native tree species will be planted which will provide food and shelter for wildlife, clean the air, and outcompete shade-intolerant invasive plant species.

Volunteers should expect to hike about two miles on varied terrain. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Long sleeves and a brimmed hat are recommended. Tools and gloves will be provided, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer.

Workdays are rain or shine but will be rescheduled in the event of thunderstorms or high winds.
