Lowries Run Expansion Project
Protecting Local Land
SUMMARY | Allegheny Land Trust is collaborating with Ross Township and local advocates to expand its Lowries Run Conservation Area by preserving 27 acres of woodlands.
BENEFITS | This land’s conservation would preserve scenic beauty, protect air and water quality, absorb stormwater, and continue the growth of a contiguous greenway in this otherwise developed part of the region.
The land’s permanent conservation benefits the health, well-being, and enjoyment of current and future residents by protecting biodiversity, air and water quality, and opportunities for close-to-home passive recreation.
Protecting this land helps address water quality and flooding issues in Lowries Run by allowing the continued absorption of 22.5 million gallons of rainwater annually. It also helps maintain air quality by annually sequestering 109,125 pounds of carbon and removing 1,913 pounds of other pollutants.
FUNDING | A total of $662,000 was needed to conserve the land. ALT applied a multi-pronged funding plan involving the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County, local foundations and corporations, and local municipalities. The final critical component of the funding puzzle is always donations from individuals in the community.
We need your help! In order to meet state grant match requirements and fulfill our funding plan, we need $50,000 from individual supporters. We hope you’ll support this effort to grow this greenway.
