About Allegheny Land Trust (ALT)
ALT is a nationally accredited 501c3 land conservation nonprofit that has helped local people save local land in the Pittsburgh region since 1993. We conserve lands that ensure our communities will have clean water to drink, fresh air to breathe, and places to learn and recreate outdoors. In addition to conserving local lands, we enact our mission by managing our lands with responsible stewardship and volunteers, and by providing all ages environmental education programs. You can learn more about our mission, vision, values, staff, and board at this link.
Recently Conserved Lands
With help from state granting bodies, local foundations and corporations, local elected officials, community leaders, partner organizations, and neighbors like you, we were able to succesfully complete the conservation of the below projects.
Dead Man’s Hollow Expansion Project, Elizabeth Township
Overview: This green space created a connection between our existing Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, the Boston Ballfield Park, the Great Allegheny Passage Trail, and the Youghiogheny River. Now, there is permanent walk-up access from those spaces to the river. The community-forged trails will remain.
Future: The long-term care for this land will be wrapped into our stewardship of Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area.
Panhandle Greenway: Protect the Panhandle Trail Conservation Project, South Fayette Township
This green space preserved land along the Panhandle Trail, serving to continue our proactive effort to create a contiguous greenway in this part of the county. This land has frontage directly on the trail, contains community-forged trails, and supports local air and water quality.
Future: As with every new land, we’ll carry out our standard stewardship procedures; activities will include monitoring and marking property boundaries, posting wayfinding and policy signage, and assessing the site and community to create a management plan.
We’ll Need Your Help
ALT conserves green space so it can continue to benefit our environment and our quality of life for generations to come. Conserving our lands is only the beginning, though. Once protected, our stewardship team begins planning for, tending to, and improving our lands. When we say that we conserve green spaces forever, that also means we manage the land forever. We hope you’ll help us make that “forever” possible by becoming a recurring member, donating to our stewardship fund, and volunteering with us.
Know Before You Go
While all of our green spaces are open dawn to dusk daily, not all are prime for exploring. Some of our projects are conserved for ecological benefit but do not host public walking trails. For our lands that are welcoming to exploring, check out our know before you go page for rules, regulations, and tips.
