Tire Cleanup- Buena Vista Heights

Help ALT remove a tire dump from the Buena Vista Heights conservation space!

Skip the gym this week; we have all the workout you’ll need out in the woods! Buena Vista Heights, 155 acres of lush, dense forest, has a tire problem. We need your help! In the spring of 2025, volunteers removed 300 tires from a ravine and staged them near a trail in the woods. Since then, more volunteers have fully removed half of these tires for proper disposal. Now, we need more folks to hike the tires the final half-mile up the trail to get them sent away for recycling. It’s a tough task, but many hands make light work! We’re teaming up with our good pals from Allegheny CleanWays and YOU to get the job done.
Dumped tires pose a risk to the environment and to humans by leaching chemicals into the groundwater, degrading and breaking down in the soil, and harboring stagnant water for mosquitoes to reproduce.
Volunteers will hike a half mile to the staged pile of tires and then work as a team to carry them back out to the trailhead. Gloves, snacks, and water will be provided. Long pants and close-toed shoes are required. Participants are asked to work within their ability and should expect to lift from 20 to 40 pounds continuously for the duration of the volunteer event.
