Dead Man’s Hollow Expansion Project
Protecting Local Land
SUMMARY | Allegheny Land Trust is working to permanently conserve 10 acres of woodlands in Elizabeth Township along the Great Allegheny Passage and adjacent to ALT’s popular Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area. Conserving this green space will preserve the character of this community, build resiliency, and protect the quality of public recreational opportunities enhancing the quality of life for generations to come.
BENEFITS | The land’s permanent conservation would benefit the health, well-being, and enjoyment of current and future community members by preserving biodiversity, air and water quality, and local scenic character as well as creating connections and protected opportunities for close-to-home passive recreation and environmental education.
Namely, conserving this land will help grow Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, further buffer the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, and protect riparian buffer with frontage along the Youghiogheny River. This land has the capacity to manage stormwater by absorbing 3 million gallons of rainwater annually. As undisturbed green space, it also maintains air quality by annually sequestering 14,478 pounds of carbon and removing 254 pounds of other pollutants.
STATUS & FUNDING | ALT currently has an exclusive contract to purchase and permanently protect this green space contingent upon successfully raising the necessary funds for closing in September 2025. As with all of its conservation projects, ALT is deploying a multi-pronged funding plan to raise the necessary funds from federal, state, and municipal grants, private foundation grants, and corporate sponsorships. The final critical component of the funding puzzle is donations from individuals in the community.
HOW YOU CAN HELP | Individual donations provide required matching dollars to unlock the full funds from state agencies and fill funding gaps. We need your help! Your support will help protect this land as permanent green space. Conservation of this land will mark an important part of Dead Man’s Hollow’s growth, and we hope you will be a part of that history.
