DESCRIPTION:Join ALT staff and WPMC Identifier Julie Travaglini for a mushroom talk and identification walk at Fern Hollow Nature Center. After a short introductory lecture indoors on fungi\, participants will look for mushrooms around Fern Hollow and collect specimens for an ID table. \nHike runs rain or shine\, NO WALK INS will be permitted. As this hike is beginner friendly\, we will be using the mushrooms common names and looking at distinguishing features to being identifying mushrooms. \nWe will not be foraging on this hike or discussing edibility. Foraging for mushrooms can be risky and it is never safe to eat a wild mushroom unless an expert confirms the identity. \n\nPlease note: As of July 1\, 2026 individual program ticket sale transactions under $25 are non-refundable. SUMMARY:eDNA Mushroom Walk at Audubon Greenway
DESCRIPTION:Join ALT staff and Western PA Mushroom Club Identifiers and Mycologists in collecting eDNA for research! eDNA\, or environmental DNA\, is a way for us to learn about the fungus that resides in the soil that may never produce a fruiting body\, aka a mushroom. Recently\, WPMC received a grant to complete sampling and eDNA work around the region to learn more about the fungus growing beneath our feet. \nThis will not be a traditional guided hike. After the eDNA portion\, attendees will be off on their own to search for fungi and slime molds to bring back to an identification table at the end. SUMMARY:Science Stroll: Foraging in Forests
DESCRIPTION:Join an ALT educator and Joey Jaros\, botanist and field biologist currently working on their PhD at Ohio State University\, for a guided hike of Barking Slopes. Participants will gain all the basics to start their own foraging journey. Over a ~1.5 mile hike\, we will identify common edible invasive plants while learning about their histories\, ecologies\, and culinary uses. Joey will also cover tips for foraging safely and ethically\, while exploring possibilities for better integrating foraging into ongoing conservation work. \nHike runs rain or shine. NO WALK-INS will be permitted. We will not be actively foraging on this walk. Foraging for mushrooms and plants can be risky and it is never safe to eat an unidentified plant or mushroom. \nJoey Jaros is a botanist and field biologist who likes to get creative in the kitchen. After completing degrees at the University of Pittsburgh and Fordham University in New York\, they are currently finishing a PhD at Ohio State\, where they research how invasive species integrate into existing biotic communities\, with a special focus on managing garlic mustard across Pennsylvania. They have been an baker since childhood\, learning to make cookies and pies with their grandma\, and have been sharing recipes with family and friends ever since. Through their work as a culinary educator at Phipps and Franklin Park Conservatory\, Joey has been on a journey to connect their commitment to sustainability with their passion for cooking\, and they are excited to share their experiences in urban foraging with you! \n  \nTICKETS

DESCRIPTION:Join ALT staff and WPMC Identifier\, Julie Travaglini\, for a mushroom hike at Dead Man’s Hollow. This slightly spooky hike will include the haunted history of Dead Man’s Hollow as we walk 0.9 mile (each way) along the Great Allegheny Passage to enter the ruins of the Hollow to look for fungi. COSTUMES ARE WELCOME – just make sure they are safe and comfortable for hiking. \nHike runs rain or shine. NO WALK-INS will be permitted. We will not be foraging on this hike or discussing edibility. Foraging for mushrooms can be risky\, and it is never safe to eat a wild mushroom unless an expert confirms the identity. \nTICKETS
