SUMMARY:Sustainability at Home: Small Ponds + Backyard Water Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join ALT for round 5 of our popular workshop series: Sustainability at Home! This series focuses on living a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle through at-home sustainability practices. For this workshop\, ALT is partnering with our friends at Interactive Environmental Programs + Penn State Extension to bring you an exciting new workshop on backyard ponds and water gardens! \nThe health of your small pond ecosystem depends on creating a sustainable habitat by maintaining the plants and water resources in your pond. Susan Boser\, Water Resources Educator with Penn State Extension\, will discuss the benefits of choosing native aquatic plant species for your pond. Participants will learn how to monitor their pond water quality to ensure that plants and animals can thrive. We will not be discussing the construction of ponds at this workshop. \nDuring the second half of the workshop\, participants will explore the frogs\, toads\, turtles\, and salamanders most commonly attracted to home water features with local naturalist April Claus of Interactive Environmental Programs. Learn why these animals are vital indicators of a healthy environment and how their presence reflects local ecosystem health. Special attention will be given to local amphibians\, including how to identify common species by their calls\, behaviors\, and seasonal activity. Live native animals will be featured to help sharpen identification skills and provide a closer look at their life histories and survival requirements. Attendees will gain practical insight into what sounds to listen for\, when to expect them\, and how simple\, wildlife-friendly pond design choices can encourage biodiversity while coexisting safely with these fascinating animals. \n*Note: Due to having two incredible speakers on this topic\, this class is slightly longer than the rest of our series. \nEach attending participant will receive one set of materials to help them get started at home (valued at $100!). Children under 18 are not eligible to receive the materials; please do not purchase a ticket for any children that may be in attendance with you. You must be present for the entire workshop to receive the provided materials. No walk-ins are permitted. \nGenerous funding and support for this series was provided by the EQT Foundation. \nTICKETS \nFind the whole series here.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn Webinar: Researching Moss in PA
DESCRIPTION:Moss Diversity and Distribution in Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area: A Survey of Bryophyte Communities with Explorations of Microhabitat Preferences and Invasive Plant Interaction \n  \n\nHow many moss species are in Dead Man’s Hollow? Join Laurel Riley\, recent Arizona State University graduate\, working Horticulturist\, and aspiring Botanist in this virtual program to learn about moss diversity and ecological roles! Laurel’s research is being conducted to lend knowledge on native moss ranges and abundances in Dead Man’s Hollow\, investigate how the presence of Pennsylvania invasive species affects the growth and persistence of such populations\, and explore the microhabitats within the green space that best harbor bryophyte life\, so as to infer or guide future conservation and habitat protection/restoration projects.\nWe hope you join us to learn more about these little plants that carpet the forest! Please use this link to join us at 12pm on June 14: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88441106009\nThis webinar will not be recorded. \nTICKETS
