SUMMARY:Sustainability at Home: Preserving Edible Mushrooms 101
DESCRIPTION:Join ALT and our friends at Flannel Roots Farm for round 5 of our popular workshop series: Sustainability at Home! Join Flannel Roots in discovering new ways to preserve and enjoy your foraged and cultivated mushroom finds! In this hands-on presentation and workshop\, we will learn various ways to preserve mushrooms (making them into pickles\, jerky\, candy\, and more!)\, taste the product of some of these methods\, and make our own DIY Mushroom Spice Rub as a bonus take-home with dried\, marinated mushrooms. This workshop provides a basic introduction to food preservation methods that can be applied to mushrooms as well as to most produce\, ensuring longer lasting nutrition. Together with Flannel Roots\, we look forward to sharing food sustainability tactics with you! \nEach attending participant will receive one set of materials to help them get started at home (valued at $100!). Children under 18 are not eligible to receive the materials; please do not purchase a ticket for any children that may be in attendance with you. You must be present for the entire workshop to receive the provided materials. DESCRIPTION:A workshop in the Aquatic Academy Series\n\nJoin an all-star lineup of ALT\, Pittsburgh Water\, Pennsylvania Resources Council and Penn State Extension staff for the next installment of our Aquatic Academy workshop series; Stormwater Science and Green Infrastructure Learning Lab! This hands-on\, immersive experience designed for educators teaching 5th grades and up. \nDuring our lab\, we’ll dive into Pittsburgh’s urban watershed\, explore how science\, history\, and engineering come together to solve real-world\, watershed-level challenges and how we can improve water quality and our environment with the choices we make as a community. \nThrough an interactive tour of the Wightman Park Green Infrastructure project\, engaging Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) activities to share in the classroom\, and expert-led discussions\, you’ll uncover the history and design of Pittsburgh’s sewer system\, our unique stormwater situation\, green infrastructure solutions that better manage stormwater\, and even career pathways for students to consider in careers that intersect these topics. \nApproximately $100 worth of resources will be given to educators in attendance. You must register to attend; no walk-ins will be permitted. You must show up and attend the entire day to receive your resources. \n5 hours of ACT 48 are available. Lunch is provided. Part of this workshop will include time outdoors at a green infrastructure park. Volunteers will use loppers and pruners to cut live stakes from trees and shrubs and store in buckets of water. We’ll be seeking out specific plant species\, which have been identified using iNaturalist and exploring the conservation space to see what else is available for harvesting. \nTools and gloves will be provided\, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own gear as well. Waders or muck boots are recommended for those who’d like to get those hard-to-reach water-loving plants. \nClosed toe shoes and long pants are required. Volunteers are asked to work within their comfort and ability and should expect to walk up to three miles on varied terrain. \nTICKETS
