DESCRIPTION:Join an Allegheny Land Trust Educator on our 50+ Walking Series\, sponsored by AARP Pennsylvania. Geared for those ages 50 and up\, we will hike ALT’s properties over moderate\, uneven terrain and distances (up to 2 miles)\, taking plenty of breaks to stop and learn about our local flora and fauna. This hike will get your hands dirty! We’ll discuss pollinators of PA on the hike\, and at the end we’ll make “seed bombs” of native plants to launch into the meadows of Audubon! Experience the beauty of these local spaces and learn how they contribute towards building a more livable community for people of all ages. \nEvents run rain or shine. SUMMARY:ALT x Pittsburgh Zoo: Girty's Woods Restoration Workday Series 4
DESCRIPTION:Week 4: Tree Planting\n\nRegistration is required so we can communicate in case of any necessary changes. \nEvery Friday throughout the month of May\, ALT is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Zoo to restore wild space in Girty’s Woods. Over the course of five weeks\, we’ll work together to build a trail\, remove invasive plant species\, plant native trees\, and install trail markers and signage. Together we’ll restore a scenic hiking route to a green space that supports native wildlife and promotes the health and wellbeing of its neighbors. \nWeek 4: Volunteers will use shovels\, mattocks\, and mallets to plant trees and install deer protection. Native tree species will be planted which will provide food and shelter for wildlife\, clean the air\, and outcompete shade-intolerant invasive plant species. \nVolunteers should expect to hike about two miles on varied terrain. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Long sleeves and a brimmed hat are recommended. Tools and gloves will be provided\, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer. \nWorkdays are rain or shine but will be rescheduled in the event of thunderstorms or high winds. \nTICKETS
