8:15 AM Check In & Light Breakfast
8:30 AM Program Begins
4:30 PM Program Ends at field site
Wetlands provide critical habitat to many native animals and plants. These areas promote biodiversity, control flooding and hold aesthetic/educational value for all residents of the Commonwealth. During the fall of 2015, Fern Hollow Nature Center staff worked with the Little Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and several other partners to restore two small wetlands at a nearby sewage treatment plant that were accidentally destroyed back in 2007. This area is home to a number of amphibian species, including the Jefferson salamander which is currently listed as a “Species of Special Concern” in PA.
Participants in this workshop will learn about the variety of wetlands and the amazing resources that they have to offer during the morning session including hands-on activities. In the afternoon Naturalist, April Claus will review the basics for identifying reptile and amphibian species most common to these wetland habitats and present more about the unique history of the site and the 10 year effort to restore these two small wetlands by concerned members of the community. The group will visit the nearby restoration site and learn how easy it is to create a wetland habitat of their own. Fern Hollow staff will discuss the resources, equipment and materials necessary to create or restore a viable wetland. Visitors to the site will be encouraged to use dip nets and microscopes to examine the aquatic biota currently living in the newly restored wetland habitat.
AUDIENCE: Interested adults, Formal/Non-formal/Pre-service educators (Act 48 available), Watershed/Conservation Organizations, Community Leaders etc.
DIRECTIONS: Once parked in the lot, the nature center is the building on the right. Walk in and straight back to the meeting space. Directions to the field site in the afternoon will be presented during the class.
